Glasgow International 2021 Festival Identity

Glasgow International is Scotland’s largest contemporary art festival, taking place every two years across the city. Originally scheduled for April 2020, the 2021 edition ran from 11–27 June, presenting over 70 exhibitions, events and performances across more than 30 venues, both in-person and online.

The foundations of the visual identity were developed in 2018, with the 2021 programme brought to life through a series of abstract illustrations by Gabriella Marcella of Risotto Studio. Nine illustrated tiles were created and then scaled, rotated and cropped to generate a flexible system, allowing for a wide range of digital and printed assets with no two applications exactly the same.

The festival’s theme is Attention, which amongst other things, invites us to think about how we pay attention to things and people around us, and the place of art in this. The bold use of abstract illustration helps underpin the festivals theme with the posters and banners arguably becoming a piece of visual art in itself. For locals and visitors to the city it brings some much needed vibrancy and colour to the dark times we’ve been through.
